The Crew

Captain Scott grew up along the coast of Newport Beach, California. An avid surfer, fisherman and sailor, Scott became a well-rounded waterman at an early age. Just out of junior high, Scott worked for a local shipyard after school and as a deck hand cleaning fish aboard local sports fishers on weekends. After high school, Scott went on to graduate from the California Maritime Academy, earning his Unlimited Master license by the age of 28.

Since 1985, Scott has sailed across the globe aboard ocean-going vessels as a deck officer in the US Merchant Marines. He also served as an officer in the Naval Reserves for 30 years, wherein he attained the rank of Captain.

During his career, Scott has traveled to countless ports worldwide, yet his favorite destination has never changed – Gulf of California’s Sea of Cortez – known in the Spanish language as Mar de Cortés. In fact Scott maintains a home near Puerto Los Cabos with his wife Kimberly and two Labradors.

Through the years, Scott has acquired considerable knowledge of the Sea of Cortez and surrounding waters and looks forward to sharing his insights and experiences of the area – and a few of his personal secret spots – with his fellow travelers.

DAVE MULLEN, Chief Expedition Officer

Born and raised in San Diego, Dave gained an affinity for both shipboard travel and photography while working as an officer aboard Navy vessels. Subsequently Dave earned an MBA from Pepperdine University while maintaining his passion for adventure and camerawork. Using the world as his canvas, Dave soon developed his expertise as a professional photographer, producer and film editor.

During his multi-faceted career, Dave has logged more than 300,000 miles upon the world’s vast waterways, including time spent as an experienced wilderness guide with Lindblad-National Geographic and the Boat Company, and as a private yacht captain. He has lead hundreds of nature and fishing expeditions into countless remote areas on and off the water. These experiences have enriched his deep appreciation for the world’s natural habitat.

Without question, Dave brings a unique set of skills to the crew, and as such creates one-of-a-kind expedition experiences for each of our guests.

Our exceptional chef Dave received his traditional culinary training at the California Culinary Academy and the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. The impetus behind his decision to pursue a career in food, however, was born of his extraordinary 14 years as a Navy SEAL. During his service, Dave explored cultural appetites across four hemispheres, savoring aromatic spices and exotic ingredients which inspired his palate and motivated him to become a professional chef.

Over the last 24 years, Dave has put his culinary expertise to work as a nutritionist, aboard fishing vessels, and as executive chef for several restaurants including the Coronado Brewing Company. Formerly Private Chef for the likes of professional golfer Phil Mickelson and rapper Dr. Dre, Dave spent 10 years of his culinary career working in this capacity.

Since Dave was raised in San Diego, he has spent nearly 30 years discovering the riches of the nearby Baja Peninsula. The Sea of Cortez has long been one of his favorite stomping grounds – and source for fresh seafood and ingredients fit for fine dining. Specializing in Pacific Rim and American Regional Cuisine, Dave prepares all of his dishes with locally grown and seasonal ingredients, and relishes preparing a fresh catch for his guests – in short order!

It’s no surprise Dave brings an eclectic fare to the table and offers dishes that are sure to satisfy even the most discerning palate – and he attentively accommodates special requests.
